I've long thought that a combination of NixOS and illumos would be incredibly useful. Software would be installed into the nix store in the global zone, and mapped into dedicated zones for each user. IP and port virtualization via Crossbow. User zones would be extremely light, with your typical database-driven web app taking no space in the zone, and very little space in the nix store.
