They sometimes make up their own preferred pronouns. Personally I am not that invested in other people's gender identities and don't mind addressing people however they want. The flipside though is that I also have no desire to memorize a bunch of pronouns for different people (names are hard enough), so if I somehow knew 5 different individuals who each had their own preferred pronoun I'd probably just not bother.
