I believe opening a bank account has different requirements in different states. In NYC I only had to show my French passport, work visa, and full-time local work contract. The process seemed designed to allow even unlawful immigrants to get access to banking. In particular I believe the IVR had different decision trees in English and Spanish. Interesting. edit: I agree having no credit history was a major PITA.
