1. Pick yourself up a < $5 ESP8266 board from ebay (Wemos D1 mini or NodeMCU Lolin).
2. On debian based linux:
- Get the correct binary from http://micropython.org/download http://micropython.org/download
- sudo pip install esptool
- esptool.py --port /dev/ttyUSB0 erase_flash
- esptool.py --port /dev/ttyUSB0 --baud 460800 write_flash --flash_size=detect 0 /path/to/binary.bin
3. Hack away!
