"Climate Scientists" did not train their entire life to be climate scientists they come to it from a general background in geology, environmental science or physics with a two-three class "focus" during undergrad, another two to three class focus during grad school and maybe a phd. Maybe. Some of them just wound up there because they were the only people in the department with the Fortran chops to get the models working.
