The effects of oil pollution on health are fairly well established from previous spills. Cleanup workers should wear protective clothing to avoid skin contact, and also respirators to avoid inhaling toxic volatiles.
- ck2 16y agoExcept BP is firing any cleanup workers that use a respirator and refusing to provide safety gear (BP says it's only fatigue and/or food poisoning) http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=Q4bDW12Fr78 http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=Q4bDW12Fr78 http://www.southernstudies.org/2010/06/bp-reportedly-threatens-to-fire-cleanup-workers-for-using-their-own-protective-gear.html http://www.southernstudies.org/2010/06/bp-reportedly-threate... (of many sources)
- motters 16y agoIn this case BP is at best being disingenuous, since the health hazards from crude oil emissions are fairly well understood. People engaged in the operation without proper equipment are risking potentially serious and long term damage to their health.
