My wife and I moved to the Midwest 23 years ago because the homelessness and - less importantly - the traffic (in SF) were getting bad back then (relative to the previous ten years). One of the changes at that time was having to pay a homeless person to 'watch our car for us' when we went to get a bite or see a band south of market.
