I've played things "by the book" (i.e. legally) for well over a decade.
And I've been coming to the same conclusion. (Actually, I became fearful of such a while ago; I've just been hesitant to act on it.)
Through the news, company actions, my own bills and the decreasing quality of the services I purchase, I'm watching the dollars I spend turned against me, continually used to extort more for less while paying hosts of lawyers to further lock up their turf, now attempting to destroy "fair use" and other rights that tie all the way back (directly or indirectly) to the U.S. Constitution.
And it seems such forces stand ever more in the way of creative thinking, building, development, and progress.
Maybe the Conservative Republics have it right: "Starve the beast!" Only, to my thinking, they are starving the wrong beast.
