Someone said once something which really describes this well:
The EU hasn't contributed ANYTHING to the internet, but they are the ones who want to regulate it the most. :(
- kuisch 9y agowhy should the ability to regulate be contingent on the level of contribution of the regulating authority?
- raverbashing 9y agoEnjoy your non-neutral internet in the US and your extortionate roaming fees when you walk closer to Canada And if by the EU you mean its countries, you're so wrong it's not even funny, but the US bubble is strong
- dustinmoris 9y agoI don't need to be a US citizen to agree with this statement. I am an EU citizen living in the EU and to be honest I think this fine is BS. The company who initiated this lawsuit is http://www.foundem.co.uk/ http://www.foundem.co.uk/. This website looks like absolute shit, it doesn't even render properly on mobile, but hey, if they fail they just blame Google search for their mistakes and the EU backs it without second thoughts after the US has fined VW recently for actual fraud.
- tobylane 9y agoWithout second thought? Can you read the easy to understand explanation given for the fine and judge again?
- strictnein 9y ago> Enjoy your non-neutral internet in the US This isn't really a thing you realize, right? But what is a thing is many European countries wanting to gut encryption. Enjoy your non-secure communications. > "your extortionate roaming fees when you walk closer to Canada" What does that even mean? Many carrier plans now include roaming throughout Canada and Mexico by default. That covers over twice the land mass of Europe.
- robin_reala 9y agoI guess the web doesn’t count?
- kilotaras 9y ago> The EU hasn't contributed ANYTHING to the internet Of top of my head: 1. WWW was created in CERN, which is funded mostly by EU countries [1] 2. Linux which accounts for more than 2/3 of web servers was created in Sweden. - raverbashing 9y agoHow could you get the country where Linux comes from wrong? (unless that's the joke)
- UnoriginalGuy 9y agoLinux was created while Linus was at the Helsinki University of Technology in Finland.
- kilotaras 9y agoSorry, Linus is from Finland, not Sweden. Unfortunately it's too late to edit post now.
- ionised 9y agoEvery heard of this thing called the World Wide Web/HTTP? How about Linux? How about C++?
- matt4077 9y agoThis really doesn't have much to do with the Internet, and your comparison is factually wrong, as well. Please go find that someone who said this, and tell him his petty nationalistic fury is unbecoming.
- sireat 9y agoYou might be familiar with https://home.cern/ https://home.cern/ and one of its 1980s employees/contractors https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee So while one could very well argue that it was a happy accident, it would not be very wise to argue that EU has not contributed ANYTHING to internet.
