I have no idea what you consider slow, but the latest improvement here is contactless payments for anything under 25 EUR, which only requires holding the card close to the terminal for about a second. After which the payment is confirmed after another second. Payments for which a PIN is needed are confirmed in the same amount of time and entering the PIN is the slowest part.
