I work in STEM education and advocacy, and this is an incredibly important issue, mainly because it is easy to overlook the pervasiveness of gender stereotypes. After visiting hundreds of schools, I have seen plenty of young males proudly sporting STEM clothing (e.g. hackathon swag, "Data Nerd" t-shirts) but rarely find female students willing to embrace such clothing the same way. The clothing is out there, being handed out for free at hackathons and on the shelves of most stores, but it will require a radical shift in mentality and the way we approach STEM education to make such clothing gender-neutral in practice.
That said, I truly appreciate OP for bringing up this discussion and will watch it closely for suggestions to bring to our network of educators.
