The only reason police organizations are making it about biometrics is because they have an easier time getting that then getting laws changed to compel pin/password unlocking. But make no mistake, this is all about getting unfettered access to everything bit of data they can without a warrant. They saw an easy opening to circumvent existing laws and they jumped for it.
