my (somewhat) unpopular take on this is that guitar heroes are made when new genres break into the mainstream. or at least it has been that way for the last 60 years or so. Delta blues, British invasion, white blues, hair metal, punk, grunge - new sounds were making waves and getting popular on the radio so kids latched on to them (partially because their parents hated it). but we haven't had a new guitar-based genre break the pop charts in the last 15-20 years so kids are only hearing new takes on old styles, like Mayer. brilliant musician but not nearly as exciting as the stuff their parents hate - EDM.
