While several other commenters have pointed out how expensive API Gateway/Lambda is. It is highly dependent on your workload. For example: We have a fairly consistent load of very small, short api requests (Billions a month). These requests can be easily served by a couple of small servers. We calculated API Gateway + Lambda to cost 30 times more than the solution we rolled on Elastic Beanstalk. We have other services which run for nothing on API Gateway + Lambda. Most of them aren't doing very much though (< 1M requests a month).
