Price comparison shopping is Amazon's home turf. They're not afraid of it. So this interpretation that they're looking to keep people from comparing prices in their own stores is terrible analysis.
This is defensive. Amazon wants people to be able to check prices on Amazon.com when they're in brick & mortar stores. They patented these techniques so they can keep retailers from using them to block access to Amazon.com.
