It would have to be a very close friend indeed for me to offer to do a bunch of free labor (in the form of teaching) in addition to giving money, and I'd have to be satisfied that the circumstances were not reasonably within the person's control. It's not that I think people don't deserve help up when they screw things up that are within their control. It's that I don't want to "throw good money after bad," and from my experience and what I've heard from others, that's the majority outcome for situations like this.
