Ask HN: Does anyone know what's happening with Magicleap?
It largely feels dead to me. With Apple coming out with ARKit, the augmented reality's time is now. Magicleap started in 2014 and still hasn't shown anything. It doesn't hog any media attention either. Anyone has details?
- mrep 9y agoThey raised [1] $793.5M 16 months ago so they still probably have a decent amount of cash that they can ride out. [1]: https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/magic-leap/funding-rounds https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/magic-leap/funding-r...
- valuearb 9y agoThey took the wrong tack, GPUs rapidly increasing processing power means that portable devices can drive AR. You don't need super heavy, super expensive custom hardware. You just need great software.
- usaphp 9y agoIt's unfair to make any assumptions right now because as far as I know general public did not see what they are working on, did they?
- valuearb 9y agoYea, my comment is entirely based onrumoiurs, including a story that claimed their first hardware was refrigerator sized. And if those stories are right, startups can change direction, so they might already be trying to adapt their software to existing consumer hardware.
