How are you going to get to places in heavy rain or snow?
- the_gastropod 9y agoBicycles work just fine in rain! And if it's unsafe to ride a bike on the roads due to snow, it's probably significantly more unsafe to drive a x,000 pound vehicle.
- eeZah7Ux 9y ago...not to mention you can get a bus.
- s0rce 9y agoRain is no problem, I commute everyday in the rain (SF Bay Area). I could see it being a bigger issue when I lived in the midwest and had much heavier thunder storms and might not want to be biking but I would usually walk or take the bus. Snow is definitely more of a challenge but much of the danger is due to poor infrastructure, the snowplows pile the snow on the side of the road which removes what was left of the little space bikes have on the road. You can get studded tires for bikes if its icy.

- victornomad 9y agobasically its easier to go by bike than walking in NL when there is snow. Bike paths are cleaned up way faster than anything else :)
- TulliusCicero 9y agoOh no, not snow! > Not many cities can boast 27 percent of cyclists continue using their bikes several times a week all year-round, especially not in cities with eight and half months of winter or an average of 256 days of thermal winter and snow. Oulu, Finland (population 191.000), however, is no ordinary town. It is a town where 98 percent of the cycling network is maintained all winter and all routes have street lighting. https://wintercyclingblog.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/oulu-finland-winter-cycling-capital-of-the-world/ https://wintercyclingblog.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/oulu-finl... With the right infrastructure and services, snow is no obstacle.
- antisthenes 9y agoThis is especially ironic in lieu of the fact that southern US loses their minds when a few inches of snow falls there, with people being equally unable to get anywhere by car until the roads are plowed as they would be on a bicycle.
- InitialLastName 9y agoIf it's raining or snowing too hard to be able to ride a bicycle (with appropriate clothing, i.e. the appropriate clothing to be outside in that weather anyway), it's probably also worth reconsidering operating the 3000lb wheelchair.
- chrisper 9y agoRoads are cleared of snow way before sidewalks / bicycle lanes are.
- Symbiote 9y agoNot in Copenhagen, the bike lanes are cleared first :-) (I mean, we need people to get to work...)
- ramonakira 9y agoWho cares! Just bike on the main road. Cars will adjust their speed.
- FooBarWidget 9y agoI put on a rain cape for bicyclists: https://www.geekalerts.com/u/Red-Cycling-Bicycle-Bike-Raincoat-Rain-Cape.jpg https://www.geekalerts.com/u/Red-Cycling-Bicycle-Bike-Rainco... Unfortunately these things are not common in the netherlands. It seems people just choose to get wet. China sells many high-quality rain capes. You can probably find webshops that sell them.
