From what I've heard/read it was basically a play against cannibalization of the mp3 player market by proto smartphones. There were two camps, Steve's which wanted a sleek new form factor without physical keyboard (touch input) rather than the alternate team's approach which was to shoehorn a phone onto an ipod.
