TK has the unfortunate habit of leaving a trail of history of screwing his employees, and that shit stinks, and sticks.
You either:
Treat your employees well such that they will go to war for you because protecting your interests is as important as protecting themselves and their own interests.
OR
Be the unbendable, spotless and ruthlessly calculating leader raising a horde of mindless robots. You churn them out and turn them over as soon as they're used up, but there's no room for you to be a flawed human being.
Can't have the cake and eat it too. Know thyself, and choose your path.
- Balgair 9y agoMachiavelli outlined the choice in 'The Prince': To be loved to to be feared? Remember the the conclusion the Italian came to: Fear is more stable, become feared.

- Balgair 9y agoNo, for real though, I thought Machiavelli said it was satirical after torture. Honestly, though, I don't actually know if is was intended as satire from the start. Was it?
- saalweachter 9y agoHe wrote it shortly after being tortured by the Medici; it wasn't published until after Machiavelli's death [although it was likely circulated before then].
- rosser 9y agoYeah, I don't think The Prince was intended to be taken normatively.
- Balgair 9y agoBy no means was I suggesting to take 'The Prince' as a manual, that would be dumb and really evil. The methods outlined in it can be seen in TK's actions. Well, that or (invoking Hanlon's Razor) they are just plain dumb.
- rosser 9y agoI think Ayn Rand's oeuvre does a better job of explaining Kalanick's gestalt than Machiavelli's, but I might very well just be biased as regards one of those authors, and their "philosophy"...
- RepressedEmu 9y agoMachiavelli also warns not to become hated which seems to be a growing sentiment from the industry towards Uber.
