Here in Portugal we have highways with automatic tolls using a small transponder. It is quite common.

  You don't need the transponder; multiple of our highways already read the plates. Then if you don't check for outstanding payments, they'll send you a letter charging it plus and administrative fee - often higher than the toll itself! It's literally highway robbery :|

    Do that in a rental car and the fee doubles again. Cost me $25 to cross a minor bridge to save 2min in the middle of the night.
