Charity auction lunch with Warren Buffett goes for $2.7M
- cperciva 9y agoStories like this make me wonder if a startup will come along and establish a marketplace for this sort of thing. I certainly don't have millions to offer, but there are people I'd be happy to donate to charity in exchange for a few hours with (dinner or otherwise).
- arkadiyt 9y agoSounds like https://21.co/ https://21.co/
- jonafato 9y agoI was going to ask "does this need a marketplace?" and link to a list someone was maintaining a few month ago of folks who offered to match donations made to the ACLU, but it looks as though someone turned that into a little web app, anyway: http://matchingdonations.us/ http://matchingdonations.us/. That said, the harder part of this is probably getting people to make that offer to begin with. If this becomes a common thing, I'm sure someone will build a platform around it. If someone told me they'd donate to a charity of my choice in exchange for having dinner or coffee, I'd probably jump at the chance and match their donation, as well.
- nathancahill 9y agoI believe clarity.fm started that way. It's now pivoted to a broader audience.
- theprop 9y agoYes, I think they were thinking of a way to pay potential startup mentors/advisors initially as a marketplace, then pivoted to general startup advice.
- theprop 9y agoGreat idea about a marketplace for this! I think it could work for celebrities...I think fans would pay a lot to lunch with someone they're a huge fan of. 21.co looks cool & a nice idea!
- logiciel 9y agolike Omaze? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omaze https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omaze
- goatherders 9y agoKill me. We don't need a "startup" for every last little thing.
- TheSmiddy 9y agoOutside of HN everybody just calls these ideas websites "someone should start a website where..."
- theprop 9y agoI remember when it was $25 to 50k and thinking that was a "steal"...but $2.7 million is ridiculous, though the money does go to a great cause :-).

- phaser 9y agoA more appropriate headline would be "Donating $2,679,001 can will get you a dinner with Warren Buffet" but who would click that bait?
- hueving 9y agoIt was an auction for dinner with Buffet. The headline is appropriate.
- xiaoma 9y agoThis title makes it sound like he's so full of himself that he'll only eat with the ultra wealthy and those foolish enough to spend millions they can't afford. In reality, he does a charity auction and dines with the "winner" who is essentially a philanthropist with a bit of self-interest thrown in.
- dang 9y agoOk, we edited the title to reflect that.
