Into the Big Surreal: 36 Hours in California’s Isolated, Lonely Island
- b_emery 9y agoIf there was ever a time to bike Hwy 1, the time is now. Few cars and certainly no RVs.
- shaftway 9y agoAny time is the time to bike Hwy 1. Best few weeks I've ever spent. When we did it mid-June a few years ago we almost never felt like we were in danger. Not in the CA sections at least.
- mixmastamyk 9y agoCan ya get through?
- s0rce 9y agoThere appears to be a trail for residents across Pfeiffer Canyon, I'm not sure if you can carry a bike through and if non-residents can use it. I'm not sure about the closure near Nacimiento-Fergusson rd. It's hard to find definitive information on what/who can go across and what is open.
- danbrekke 9y agoHere's a very reliable (and often entertaining) source on road closures in the area: https://bigsurkate.blog/ https://bigsurkate.blog/
- DAddYE 9y agoFew sections (like Big Sur) are closed so check before going on the road (like I did) and find the surprise.
- gumby 9y agoPerhaps we shouldn't keep fixing highway 1. It was built as a WPA project in the 30s. I think it's beautiful, but it's fragile and expensive. It might be better to build some perpendicular connections to 101 instead.
- emmelaich 9y agoI travelled in the USA recently and attempted to drive to SF from LA along the coast. It seemed very odd to me that this road closure (rock fall) was not signposted well ahead. Google map directions didn't mention it either.
