Turns out it's not as laser-like as the press made it out to be. Really the problem is writers and journalists who are not domain experts trying to explain this stuff to laypeople. There is no requirement for story writers to have been mathematicians or biologists when it comes to popularizing so you end up with half-truths and outright lies.
