I was more confused as to why they don't just move. The first woman who gets $1k in social security -- she would get that check anywhere, right? She could get a 2bedroom apartment in Oklahoma City for around $500/month. I'm using OKC because I'm familiar with it, and it's a fairly big city, so there's a good chance at finding a job there. I'm sure there are many locations like OKC around the US.
- pilom 9y ago2 reasons come to mind. 1) it costs a fair bit of money to move. Especially half way across the US. Saving up the necessary money for a bus ticket may be impossible (no bank account, don't want to keep that money on you for fear of theft, you won't have a credit card so it must be cash, etc). 2) Support networks. Generally homeless people either have relatives, friends or at least case workers who can help them if they get into trouble. Not everyone knows someone in another city to help them land on their feet.
- clarkm 9y agoThe woman in the article is living in her car. She could just drive there.
- danans 9y agoThat might not even be possible. Homeless people can't afford to maintain their cars either so there is no guarantee they would make it to the destination by driving, especially if it is an old high mileage vehicle.
- pilom 9y agoSo lets say she gets halfway there and her car dies. She can't pay for the repair, she can't pay for a hotel, she doesn't know where to get services. She'd all of a sudden be in a much worse situation.
