Ask HN: How to Productize a Service?

I'm captivated by people like Jason Fried and Amy Hoy who have successfully turned service businesses into product companies, but I'm not sure how to start doing that. How have others have created products out of services? If you made the transition from contract work, how did you brainstorm ideas for products that can be sold again and again, either one-time only or via subscription?
