I took the 2.2k from flexie's comment which does sound right for a studio apartment in the east village. 3x that would be 6.6k which would get you a very nice two bedroom. Maybe a 3 bedroom. My point was that if they weren't spending so much on food/clothing/bills/etc than they would be capable of affording a perfectly nice apartment.
