I partially disagree, many do get meaningful raises without asking, but yeah if that doesn't happen then I agree with all you said.

- otterley 9y agoYou're right. I mistakenly implied that it doesn't happen, but it has happened in my own life as well. I should have said "rarely." I have noticed, however, that as my career has progressed into more senior levels, automatic raises beyond typical inflation adjustments (2-3% per annum) have become rarer. Thus, I've had to negotiate for raises between promotions.
