    This is a common problem on HN. There is a specific spot for the email address that is visible to the member him/herself and many people think it is publicly visible, but it is not. If it has not been added to the freeform "about" area where you can tell the world about yourself, no, it isn't visible to anyone else. This is likely what is going on here.
