It is a common theme -- the first time big ideas are tried they often fizzle. The second time, usually after 10+ years, is when the kinks get worked out, underlying technology needs are better understood and the tech can expand (or explode) in the consumer markets. AI, video calls (AT&T -> skype), GUIs, digital cameras, etc. I hope recent bio boom will return in 10-15 years with real breakthroughs (as is, visible and useful to an average person).
