You're missing a huge component. I used to play games where people would threaten me all the time. But they were Russians or Danes who lived halfway around the world that didn't even know my real name. Even if they were telling the truth it didn't matter at all. It seems very different if they know your name. And where you live. And are physically around you all the time. It's not exactly easy to "turn off" that the person sitting in the same room as you has a decent chance of being the same person posting about how they are going to rape and/or murder you.
