Where is the money really coming from? Are you sure the amount you're getting paid is calibrated to the work you're doing? Are you making 10x because you're working hard, or are you working hard because you're making 10x (and are not sure it's going to last)? Like you say, there are a lot of variables.
A few years ago I got on an excellent, high-paying contract. Had the contract lasted a few more years, I probably could have retired early. But neither the start of the contract, nor its end, were entirely (or even mostly) in my control. And while my work history was certainly a factor in getting the contract (though definitely not the only factor), it did nothing to make the contract last any longer.
- owebmaster 9y agoI'm working simultaneously in two "full-time" contracts (both contractors know about each other). As I need just half of the earning of one contract to live well, I'm saving 3x what I would normally. It is not the first time it happened to me but it is the first time I'm saving and planning ahead my financial independence. Another important point is that one year ago I had US50k (but in brazilian reais) in debt because of a failed startup and a lot of difficult getting back to the work force. It was really hard to bootstrap myself out of that situation.
