Not sure the cryptocurrency boom and gift certificate utility are super-correlated -- Target has been trying to trap me and my USD with those checkout cards for ages. Usually the incentive is social shame for not just giving straight cash to my friends as gifts -- here, I'm not so sure? I guess it's about as viable as Dogecoin.
