Ask HN: If .com taken what is best TLD?
Decided on name for an app but the (app name).com is (of course) taken.
.net is available so are all other TLD/ccTLD
At the moment the website would just be to tell people about the app and links to app/play store. It is possible in the future users could access some functionality of the app via the website but not any time in the next 10 months.
.net is not used a lot but would one pick that over say .io? Could also have (app name)APP.com or get/join/use (app name).com though down the line that would not be as good.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
btw the .com has been registered for 12 years but is not in use.
- Nadya 9y agoGet a new name. Mess with the spelling (drop a vowel). Add the word "app" to the domain like what Discord did with `discordapp.com` or add "get" like `getsharex.com`. Do whatever you need to do to get the .com because every other TLD sucks unless your target audience is tech-savvy enough where "URL Hacks" (like my domain) are memorable or .io is trendy.
- bruceb 9y agoThanks for the feedback. Was trying to think of a consumer app that has a non .com url. Can't think of any off the top of my head.
- bobjones17 9y agoThere is quite a few, for example. Two at the top of my head (without googling) it are: - Vine.co, - pokemon.club, I'm sure there's a few more examples out there floating around. I personally feel if you have a unique name that's preferably easy to spell, a lot of your traffic would come from google search or maybe via social media page anyway. Sure, if .com is available, certainly get it, however, I guess it also depends somewhat your audience too, whether they're tech savvy to the stage where having a non . com could be trendy and new. :)
