The main reason why Hybrid web apps suck today is because using a web view to render your ui fundamentally inserts a middleman between you the developer and the underlying memory management and ui rendering systems. This limits the type of apps you can build. Web views dont allow you to embed native components (I.e uicollectionviews)into HTML/CSS. It's an all or nothing solution. This makes it hard to work around certain categories of performance problems. Today this no longer the case But historically (around 2011-2012) the frameworks and tools available to web developers (jquery, es5)were inferior to those available to native developers. Non hybrid approaches like React Native have a much better chance of being the "winner" today over traditional native development.
