The article mentions that the primary advantage of this approach is that it provides the long distance coverage necessary to handle highway speeds. It also states that, because of the device design, you'd need 4, one at each corner.
It seems to me that you don't need 200m coverage to the rear, and maybe the rear of the vehicle could be handled by a less expensive 360-degree lidar unit?
