My older brother and I tried to get our 386 and 486 hooked up over a null modem cable to play Doom when we were kids. We had to use two gender changers in sequence to make it work. There was some kind of "More Magic" electrical situation going on that we never completely diagnosed, but it was reliable with that setup where a direct connection would simply time out over and over.
