Why Ke Jie doesn't connect stones in left-center groups?

The only questionable connection I see in that group is the stick at the top (the four stones on the 7'th column); but the cut doesn't quite work out for white because after the cut, black can extend his two dead stones at the 3-2 point. By cutting, white shorted himself a liberty.
