I knew a guy that was an orphan shipped around endlessly until college. An old friend of mine (since passed) found him pushing carts or something and got him into community college. I lived with him when he transferred into uni. He couldn't read very well until junior year but he forced himself to learn to read and write. He was never completely illiterate but maybe a 4th grade reading level when I met him. It's been 5 years since then and you would never know. He graduated college and got a solid job, and his reading and writing skills are basically normal. Damn proud of that guy
