I managed SimplePie using a self-hosted SVN repository for the first 5 years of its life. Contributions exploded AFTER moving to GitHub. The AWS SDK for PHP started life as a project called Tarzan on Google Code. GitHub made code feel more accessible. It made contributions easier. It improved the visibility inside the project.
