The news cycle really started once Bitcoin went over $1 but it was still limited to technical. I think the first mention of BTC was in 2010 on HN. The first real bubble was the rise to around $50 and then fall to $2-3 in mid 2011. BTC started to get mass media attention then. I know because I mined some coins (in a pool) in 2011 then stopped when the price dropped below my price of electricity. So someone could have bought BTC for $2 in 2011 for a nice profit but not the insane one. 1000x is nothing to sneeze at but the real profits were made when it was just pennies in 2009-2010 and only crypto guys knew about BTC.
