I'm not sure if a stronger focus on git/GitHub is a step into the right direction for Atom users. I'd strongly recommend to provide a choice. Why not other VCSs, why not other platforms? We get it, Atom is GitHub's pet toy. But never assume it will be forever. Remember Sourceforge and CVS?

There's nothing stopping you from disabling this and installing one of the many quality community git packages. We even list them at the bottom of the launch site! https://github.atom.io https://github.atom.io
