That isn't the IP address of the HackerNews server, that's a Cloudflare IP address. Cloudflare is a forwarding proxy service that helps HN manage large loads or DDoS attacks while protecting the origin server IP address from discovery.
Cloudflare allows the following ports for HTTP/HTTPS forwarding:

- ParameterOne 9y agoIDK, I just got the Shodan chrome extension and when I'm on HN that's what it says.
- throwawayback9 9y agoDo you know how cloudflare/content proxying works?
- blackflame7000 9y agoCloudflare basically acts as an intermediary between your web server and the internet. Requests to your site are first routed through cloudflare's large network where things like DDOS attacks are filtered out before being forwarded to your website. The end result is that your webserver receives sanitized traffic and your webserver's IP is protected from the internet. https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/205177068-Step-1-How-does-Cloudflare-work- https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/205177068-S...

- geoah 9y agoIt's a very big reverse proxy
- dang 9y agoPlease don't ask questions to imply that someone doesn't know something. People often do that as a point-scoring tactic (e.g. to prove how smart they are compared to the other person) and that's uncivil. If someone doesn't know, teach them (or just don't comment). blackflame7000's reply is a great example.
