- acabal 9y agoShameless plug: You can read free/libre editions of Confessions of an English Opium Eater and Suspiria de Profundis here: https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/thomas-de-quincey/confessions-of-an-english-opium-eater https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/thomas-de-quincey/confessi... https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/thomas-de-quincey/suspiria-de-profundis/ https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/thomas-de-quincey/suspiria... I found myself agreeing with this article re. his prose style. It's flashes of beauty surrounded by overlong, overcomplex arabesques of prose. Confessions is, I think, his best work, if only because I think his difficult life and the descriptions of Georgian-era drug culture make the density of the prose worth it.
