I've had 9-5 jobs (as as software engineer at small companies) for the last 10 years, and I mostly like the work I do. Recently, I've founded a startup with a friend and I work on that in evenings and weekends. From that perspective, PG's article makes a lot of sense to me. The problem with Atwoods reply is that it has a high level of slashdot-esque "it's not true because it hasn't happened to me".
