Ask HN: Best practices for SPARQL endpoints?

Hello, Are there any guidelines on how to go about having a SPARQL endpoint available? I come from the web development camp, and it would be out of question to have an SQL endpoint to query it directly. Is that not the case for SPARQL? Is having an API mediating between client and SPARQL a good idea? So clients would talk to the API, and the API would talk to SPARQL. If you have any recommendations, tips or general advice it would be of great help.
