Compared to Civ1/2 it has nicer graphics tilesets. Sometimes I play (I am more into board games like Eclipse en Scythe) and then I use the 2D tileset and a tiny universe for quick play. For other open source civs - but much more retro - you might like VMS Empire, Classic Empire or XConq.
