I think interpersonal relationships are a lot more complicated today. We're supposed to be oh so civilized and well adapted, while lugging around a legacy as apex predators. Basically gorillas in suits that have to sit in an office chair all day, and make polite conversation at the coffee machine. Consider that most so-called anxiety can be traced back to the fight-or-flight response, where we are conflicted because we want to either go nuclear or get the fuck out of there, but can do neither because of social pressure and inhibitions. No wonder some people flip.
