Speaking for myself - having a marriage and children helped my career and income: It forced me to budget my time, forced me to think of the future, and forced me to "grow-up" for a lack of a better term. My wife also has seen her career blossom - she started at an office admin, and now hacks on a giant database and helps manage the whole project. I'm convinced that our marriage and children helped her as well.
