And here I thought the only reason we were in Afghanistan was for the [opium](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Afghanistan_opium_poppy_cultivation_1994-2007b.PNG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Afghanistan_opium_poppy_cu...) and the potentially lucrative [oil pipeline](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Afghanistan_Pipeline http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Afghanistan_Pipeline). Now that we've discovered mineral riches, I'm guessing it's time to bring some Haliburton-style capitalism (I mean democracy) to the Afghan people.
It looks like we'll be there for a very long time.

- natrius 16y ago> The idea is that a Markdown-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it’s been marked up with tags or formatting instructions. http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/ http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/ I'd prefer links as footnotes, but using markdown even when it isn't supported isn't so bad.
- rms 16y agoIf you want opium, google for "dried poppy pods" and you will get raw, dried opium sent to your door for a reasonable price and in a professional manor. That we are waging a war in Afghanistan to stop the supply of opium when it is so easily available (legally!!!!!!) on the internet is just one more example of how the world is insane.
